Maslenitsa in Moscow. The Russian Pancake week has started today. This spring celebration, a religious holiday with pagan elements, is marking the last winter days before lent starts.
The Russian bliny, pancakes with fillings such as caviar, mushrooms and honey, are symbolic of the sun. Almost every Russian city has its Maslenitsa Festivals this week. See also my column published a few years ago in Transfer Magazine: www.transfermagazine.nl (in Dutch only).
